Godolphin Exposed as Drug Cheats

I wonder how long has this been going on. I suggest that Coolmore and Juddmonte may also need tighter drug testing regimes just to reassure the horse race following public that their operations are 100% above board .
I (without the benefit of hindsight) have always been a touch suspicious of the success enjoyed by these world wide, massive horse racing enterprises, even though between them they have hundreds of horses and (it seems) almost limitless funds. Successful stallions can be worth millions to those who own the breeding rights. Viagra for horses ?, who knows. The incentives are certainly there to cut corners or to stretch, even break the rules to produce winners when huge sums of money are at stake.
The US horse racing administrations allow the use of many drugs on horses which are prohibited in the UK. Perhaps the Godolphin trainer was confused over what was and what was not permissible.
Whatever. Punters expect that horses, just like Olympic athletes, should perform on their respective merits and not under the influence of performance enhancing substances. Horse racing and breeding is a huge industry in the UK, more so in Ireland where Coolmore is based. Any incidents which endanger the credibility of the industry need to be sorted as soon as possible. Cheating jockeys & trainers and rouge bookies & punters have no place in the 'sport of kings'

Thing is that his horse Encke won the St. Ledger which denied Camelot the Triple Crown and a place in the history books. Personally, I don't think we will be seeing much more of him in the training ranks. The Sheikh takes his racing and horses very seriously indeed.

good post .. the Sheikh and other big name owners' desire for more & more success probably plays a big role in the 'stretching' of the rules by ambitious and under pressure trainers, Remember Uncle Nicky Henderson recently attracted a long ban for the use of banned drugs/medicines .. who would have thought it .. such a lovely chap

I was going to post this story yesterday. I heard the trainer claim, that he thought the use of anabolic steroids were ok if the horses weren't due to run in the short term.

That's about as plausible as the Newcastle fan who punched the horse, claimimg that the scarf around his face was to prevent toothache.

    Frivolous appeals :-)

Horse racing has been bent for a long time.I'm not surprised in the least, thats why I rarely bet on a horse these days.

I have visions of horses, hanging around the back of dodgy gyms, taking steriods and dodgy hormones, before returning to pump weights...

This was not a random check. They were tipped off and 11 out of around 250 horses were found to be positive for anabolic steroids.

There have been rumours for years about certain stables and many years the finger was pointed at Coolmore who had several champions who went on to fire blanks at stud

It's always been bent. I worked in a bookie's as a student vac job and it put me off for life. A long time ago, but it was unbelievable that no-one spotted the behaviour of some of the stables.

"Rarely bet on a horse". So you know it's bent, but still bet sometimes Richie?

Gerard Butler, who's facing a ban for administering steroids to horses, claims that the use of a 'steroidal rub treatment' for horse's limbs is in quite common use at various Newmarket stables. Butler has been quiet lately. I bet the BHA is doing it's utmost to ensure his silence bar assassination.
As mentioned above, champion trainer (NH) Henderson recently was banned for six months for the misuse of drugs on one (sic) of his animals. Howard Johnson, two years ago was banned for life for using an inappropriate substance on his chasers and hurdlers.
The rot has spread from NH to the flat. We have not heard the last of this .. UNLESS .. the 'industry'/sport is regarded by the powers that be as far too economically important to allow the boat to be rocked until it capsizes.

Howard Johnson was banned for allowing a vet to carry out an illegal operation to de nerve a horses leg.Not for any illegal drug use.

Not so: he was also found guilty of administering steroids to horses .. however he was banned not for life but decided to retire after sentencing to a long ban
