Dorian Dervite

or Dorian Device as my little boy calls him - what does he bring to the team? Obviously I don't get to see him play being over here in Canada & I keep missing all these live TV games we are involved in....he seems to have become a very important squad player - how is he rated by those that go? What kind of contract is he on & will he be around next year into the future for us??

Bought in as a CB, much better at CM. Good at breaking up play and can pass a ball. Would personally be happy to keep him next year but his contract will be up and I will be down to money.

Think DD will be retained. He's done enough to show he can do a job in this division and unless we have a lot of money to move very upmarket player wise which we don't I think it would be good business to sign him for longer.

Pretty much exactly what SHG said above.

He came to the club as a CB and to be fair we needed (and still need) back up in that department. As CB he's done ok, but lacked consistent game time. As a squad player he's more than good enough, but I don't think I'd be confident about him as a regular starter.

Definitely better as a defensive midfielder than a centre back, is prone to a miss kick or two and gives the ball away cheaply at times, but he covers the back four really well, is an extra physical presence at set pieces, gets to a lot of second balls and has a powerful (but erratic) shot on him.

    He's good enough for now

If we're cutting costs at the end of the year then expect Taylor to be let go and Dervite to sign up.

Plays a really good role sitting infront of the defence, primarly used in away games and by accounts he had a solid game last night. Was really impressed with him midweek at Leeds before xmas and he seems to have a good attitude.

Seems one to hold on to, at the very least a decent defensive midfielder, who can if push comes to shove also serve as a center back... Curbs did love a versatile player, I guess his spiritual son SCP has the same mentality. Probably won't be one of those midfielders who chucks in a few goals though to judge by his shot at Palace! Frees up Stephens too, which will help the team as whole if Dale is on form.

I don't mind Dervite as a CM/DM, but he looks a bit suspect at CB to me. I much prefer the choice of Morrison, Cort and Taylor, but i think we need a decent CB to cover in the summer. As said in CM/DM role i think Dervite is actually pretty good and with a run could get better.

    Good, solid DCM

    Pony CB

I would keep him as an anchor specialist and as above, CB is an area to reinforce in the Summer. Morro probably should have been dropped at least once this season after sustained poor form but we lacked the strength in depth to do so. Taylor out of contract as well so might well be let go if he wants games in the later years of his career.

I like the little Iv seen of him. Think it might be a bit like cort last season, a bit part whilst settling then a major role next season.

Thought he was excellent v Millwall at CB

Has been a bit inconsistent but then again he's not been a regular, has played odd games in different formations or come off the bench.

More to come from him perhaps.

Agreed with Henry, his performance at CB against Millwall was fantastic. He's decent in the air.

When you look at some of the 'peripheral' players who have been involved this season (Kerkar, Jonsson, Seabourne, Taylor etc) he's probably been one of the more reliable ones.

The way he covered the defence yesterday was amazing

I think he's shown himself to be a good player, but in my opinion Mighty Michael Morrison and Leon Cort should start. Still great to have Dervite as an option though

I didn't see him at Milwall, but I agree re: reliability. There have been games he was not particularly good, but they tend to be an exception not the rule, whereas Kerkar is totally unpredictable and Jonsson did not have a single game where he looked anything like decent that I can remember. Taylor was very good when he came in, and unlucky to be dropped I thought. I would much prefer him at CB than Dervite, that's for sure.

He is a big and solid unit. Last night he was very effective as a midfield 'stopper' in front of the back four, a job he does well. He's versatile as -of course- his real job is as a central defender. I hope he sticks around for a long time, especially as Cort & Taylor are no spring chickens and we'll need reinforcements in central defence before too long.

Another positive for him is that he's only 24. Plenty of time to perfect his craft at CB. He's good enough to be a squad player at the moment, but wouldn't say he was as good as Morrison or Cort.

Solid player. Don't agree he's a poor centre back as some have said. We were under the cosh for 85 minutes at Millwall and he was absolutely quality.

    Consistency comes with games.

Probably fourth choice as centre back, but apart from Hughes and possibly Pritch, there is no-one who can act in that defensive mid position particularly effectively, and in the formation Powell went with to start Leicester, it's pretty important I would think.

played really well at millwall always find him better in the team when we are away from home for some reason.

I felt he was a vital part of the win yesterday, he did his job as a defensive screen well. He does nothing particularly special or rememberable, but that usually means he is doing what he needs to do - break up the opponent's attack. That said, his finish at Leeds was good. He was vital in that game as well, he didn't leave Diouf with any space outside of the box to shoot. A good, competent CDM.

I would tend to disagree about him being "pony" at centre back, I felt he had a good game against Brighton, it was Morrison after all that made the error in that game. He did have a poor game against Huddersfield but players have bad games, it happens.

I agree that to be consistent high class CB you need to play regularly with your partners , and he hasnt been given this opportunity at this position so far, but he was one of the highly rated CB when younger , so potential is here .
As CMF those who have played (or still playing) "seriously" football know how this is a difficult , exhausting and demanding position. I saw the video of the Leicester game and he really did a high level job .

Agreed, needs a run at CB to really show what he can do in the position. Didn't he only get a year 'cause of a knee issue

He was excellent as DMF at Selhurst.

Thought he played well against Ipswich and I really don't think he gets as much credit as he deserves.

Don't understand all the calls for 'Wood to come back' just because he is a standard no nonsense centre half, Dervite is a very cultured centreback and IMO is our best ball-playing CB. Might be going against the grain here but I thought that the majority of his distribution was good against Ipswich and the few times it wasn't at least he was trying to play intelligent balls rather than hoof it like Morrison. I think he has been our best CB this season and when he was dropped for Wood a few months back I was gutted for him because I think Morrison has been a bit below par this season and he should be the one to be dropped first.

He's probably become one of my favourite players mainly because he doesn't seem as appreciated for the good qualities that he has by what seems like the majority of our fans.

I'd like to give Wood & Dervite a go if one can pass with his right foot.

Note Dorian's marking in the double Alnwick save clip, and then, moments later, for the goal we conceded. Dervite at fault in both!

I had DD as the best of the back four on Saturday albeit only gave him a 5 in the players marks. Thought he did ok when he came on for Wood at home to Wigan then away at Brum and QPR (missed Leeds game). Not sure if it was his man though that scored the Ipswich winner :-( Nice headache for the gaffer but from what I have seen of Wood he is the better defender and not too shabby with the ball at his feet either.

That doesn't surprise me - his positioning is not great, particularly early in games and I think he flatters to deceive as he looks more comfortable on the ball than Cort or Wood but his distribution is really no better than them. Would rather Wood play as I think he has done well and links better with Wiggins on the left.
