  • Fantastic, you never know, if he keeps it up he might just have a shout...
  • cant wait for the Evening Gooner headline to be re-used

    "CHRIS WHO?"
  • Is there anywhere with the full 191 named list?

For me I thought the olympics is about the best of the best. Surely the football team should consist of the best 11 footballers from each nation otherwise it's a bit farcical. All these silly rules about age categories etc seem to ruin the prestige a bit.

That said well done solly, great achievment to make the list and know he'd do us proud.
  • If Pearce has watched him on several occasions this season he must be considering him for the England U21 team?
  • Indeed, next game Feb 29, i wouldn't be totally surprised if he gets a call-up

I wonder what odds you could get on him featuring!
  • Fifa don't want it to compete with the World Cup hence the age restrictions.
  • He deserves it. It will undoubtedly bring recognition from other clubs (unfortunately) but I hope he gets in! He deserves it!
  • There are no minimum height restrictions then?

I love Solly as much as the next guys but I don't think he is one of the top 15 under 23 players in Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
  • But how many of the top 15 are better RB's?
  • Hope he gets in, ive got tickets for 2 team GB matches
  • Good on him. I hope he gets in it will be great for him.
  • A lot of the best U23s in GB and NI are in contention for there national teams. I didn't think Scotland and Wales wanted their players playing for GB. I thought they told their players that if they play for GB, they cannot play for their nations.
  • Wales might have a change of heart as Gareth Bale has already put himself forward for it.

  • @shine166 how dya know whos playing in the matches uve got tickets for??

    @peteshep1905

They released dates for team GB to sell more tickets on the last drop. I got Wembley (29th july) and Old Trafford (26 july), both are 2 back to back games ... one of which is team GB.
  • Can't think off the top of my head that there are many better U23 British right backs, but then again other clubs wouldn't have a clue who Solly is. Wonder if Jenkinson would have got one of Pearce's letters.
  • Hasn't Jenkinson played for Finland yet then?
  • Shine - did they ? Link please.

The only tickets I've got for the Olympics are all Wembley football (3 games) and I have no idea who is playing ?

only team GB fixtures and each of those is 2 games for the price of one (30 mins break before second game kicks off)

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/olympics/8880790/London-2012-Olympics-Team-GB-football-fixtures-announced.html

'Coached by Stuart Pearce, they will begin their Olympic campaign at Old Trafford on Thursday July 26, followed by fixtures at Wembley Stadium on Sunday July 29 and the Millennium Stadium on Wednesday Aug 1.'
  • is Solly going for the high jump ? .... boom boom
  • Your right Sam3110 he has already played for Finalnd U-21, does that mean he couldn't play in the Olympics then? as i thought you could change your national football team from U-21 to seniors.
  • Is there a list of all the people who've received a letter?
  • The updated squad list has now seen the original 191 cut to 80 - seen lots about David Beckham still being in the squad, but more importantly - do we know if Solly's still there ?

I'd imagine not, if the Olympics were a year later and Solly had proven himself in the Championship he'd have a great shout but this might have just come too soon for him
  • Wheres the matches being held???
  • Wheres the matches being held???
I got tickets to see us at Wembley and Old Trafford.
  • How come there are players from NI being considered for team GB? Northern Ireland is not part of Great Britain.
Anyhow, if so, well done Solly.
  • Erm....

technically correct however Great Britain is the name under which the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland competes at the Olympic Games

Think you got your north and south's mixed up.

  • So is Solly in it or not?! Where's the shortlist!
  • That was my point Salad. Politically i don't give a monkeys.
  • I'm well aware Curb_it. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. NI is in the UK not GB.

Even if Solly doesn't make it I have a feeling that Olly will ...
  • That surely is wrong? On more than one point.

  • That surely is wrong? On more than one point.

I read it again and there is no surely about it, it is very wrong.
  • After the Good Friday agreement, competitors from Northern Ireland can choose between competing for GB or the Republic of Ireland in the Olympics.

In football, many players from N Ireland (presumably Catholics) have chosen to play for the Republic as the are allowed to do now, e.g. Darron Gibson and McLean, so I presume they then couldn't play for GB in the Olympics.

  • so is Solly in or not????????????????????????
  • Salad Member
pay attention Gary, he is in the NI squad

    Looks correct to me.
    Always understood.

    GB - England,Scotland,Wales
uk - england ,scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland,
British Isles - as Uk plus the Isle of Man etc and Southern Ireland/Ireland/Eire

  • This debate is dire... please take it to another thread! Is Solly in the latest list? Can we get Soundas to call the FA and find out?
  • The Irish don't consider Eire to be in the British isles and in the good Friday agreement they refer to 'these islands' to avoid controversy
  • Sorry for bringing this up. It's just semantics at the end of the day i suppose.
  • Someone? Anyone? Is Solly in?
  • I'm sure he'll be in the short list...
  • I'm sure he'll be in the short list...
    Is that a hightist dig?!

"England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland are often mistaken as names of countries, but they are only a part of the United Kingdom."

"Members of the Commonwealth of Nations recognize the United Kingdom Monarch as their own king or queen, but remain politically independent."

I am fairly sure in my mind that both these "facts" are incorrect.
