Reserve league

Following on from us withdrawing last season, Palace, Millwall and Brentford have all withdrawn this summer.

  • The more teams that pull out will leave more friendlies for reserve sides, only need the O's, Barnet and AFC to do the same and we can have a regular stream of semi competitive friendlies.

Maybe they could start up a little league of some sort ?

    Can't see it catching on

So what are these three doing? The same as us?
  • The reserve league going to the wall will have far more impact on the future of the England team / English football than any number of enforced home-grown talent rules in the premiership.

The FA should be seriously worried.

    Queue absolutely no action what-so-ever.
  • Only 7 teams left in the league

Aldershot Town, Brentford, Brighton & Hove Albion, Crawley Town, Gillingham, Leyton Orient and Wycombe Wanderers.

Friendlies against who we want when we want has to be better for our squad players than a game against Aldershot or Crawley's reserves.
  • Maybe im talking shite but.....The Premier League & the FA are trying to promote home grown talent, yet clubs at a lower league level like ourselves, cannot afford to participate in a reserve division. It is extremely hard for players over 18 to get competitive experience if they arent included in the first team squad.....Loans being the only option. Take Mambo for example, he's 19. Now we are out the League Cup, is he likely to feature again?...playing against decent league standard strikers in a reserve division may bring him on.
IMO the FA need to look into the finance aspect of League clubs and somehow make it mandatory for clubs to participate in a reserve division.
  • why not just make the rule that your reserve side plays the same morning as the senior fixture? Mind you I guess that could be an issue for benched players
  • not just the cost, although that is the biggest factor for us imho, but that suspensions carry over to league games and you can't so easily play trailists.

Allowing reserve games to be played at training grounds would be a step forward although fans may not like it.

  • What's the issue with trialists?
  • Good points Valley Gary.......

For all the posturing, the FA seem happy to keep the 'status quo' and let the top clubs in the prem to import players from wherever, and then when the likes of Arsenal have a side stuffed of foreign players, bleat what can we do about it!.

Foreign players have brought skill and improved the standard of football, but they have also made it hard for English players to get into football at a pro level. Whatever the answer to this issue the FA need to show some enterprising leadership in this, which so far I cannot see happening soon.
  • the FA aren't short of money, they could easily help finance the reserves leagues for clubs in the lower tiers.

I agree. How many did we usually get attending our reserve games when we were in the Prem?...Clubs shouldnt be using the games to seek revenue. have them behind closed doors if necessary....they should be solely to get players fit and to look at trialists and fringe/youth players.

It's no so much about revenue. Staging games even at Ebbsfleet cost £1000s due to stewarding and staff costs.

    Sparrows lane costs nothing.

To be honest i had actually forgot we played at Gravesend. Sparrows Lane is like a carpet....easily good enough to host ressie fixtures.
  • It's not just the cost of holding the games, its the cost of having a squad big enough to field two groups of players. If you forced teams to cover the cost themselves to field a reserve team then teams would simply pull-out of the under 18s league instead. We simply don't have two full senior teams, and nor should we.
