The ratio of height to width of a rectangle. Images with a wide aspect ratio are wider than they are tall. Images with a tall aspect ratio are taller than they are wide.

35mm film has an aspect ratio of 2:3. (24x36mm and sometimes called 1.5:1) Television usually has an aspect ratio of 4:3 (1.33:1) and some digital cameras use this aspect ratio as well. High definition television (HDTV) uses a ratio of 9:16 (1.78:1) , which is one of the aspect ratios supported by APS film.

  • Sorry B, didn't answer your question.

On DVDs most of the older films are on 1.33:1, newer widescreen stuff is on 1.66:1
  • I think American stuff is on an even higher ratio (1.85:1) - which is why their DVDs don't play on our players.
  • No, your first answer was fine. Was just watching "It happened here" (great WWII film BTW if you've never seen it - Set in 1944 after succesful German invasion of Britain) and it said that on the box
