Question re history of The Oval Cricket Ground.

Does anyone know if The Oval was ever actually in Surrey itself?
Looking at current county boundaries it would seem unlikely.
It was a cricket ground from around 1845 then in 1888 new boundaries were set up forming the then new London boroughs....(these boundaries being 'tinkered with' yet again in 1972, to most peoples annoyance if I remember rightly...........were we ever consulted by the way?).
So back to the original question ...was The Oval ever in Surrey?

Since 1889 there have been some major changes in the administrative boundaries of the county of Surrey.

o Until 1889 the ancient county of Surrey extended as far north as the Thames and as far east as Rotherhithe.

o In 1889 the County of London was created, and the areas of the modern London boroughs of Lambeth,
Southwark and Wandsworth were removed from Surrey.

The Oval also plays a significant role in both domestic and international football history

These are the boundaries of Surrey through the years, the top right hand corner (Camberwell/Wandsworth etc) being lost when the County of London was formed in 1889. Is the Oval in that area? If so then it was in Surrey at one point in the past.

Incidently it would seem that The Oval was indeed in Surrey at one stage.

It certainly was. There's a still Surrey/Kent border post up on Telegraph Hill, and another one in Rotherhithe.

As long as Superkent can go there 4 times ayear and come away with victories in the County Championship , FPT , Pro£0 and the Twenty/20 who cares where it is ?
