OUR F***ING DEFENDING!!!

edited November 2006 in General Charlton
I’m not getting into this Dowie IN / OUT malarkey but when will we learn to defend simple balls. The fact we had previously kept clean sheets in the league had more to do with the inability of the oppo than us if I’m honest!!

Fulham – Two stupid mistakes, 2 goals against, 0 points.
Man City – They should have had 1 / 2 goals from corners. A combination of good luck and good goalkeeping meant we kept a clean sheet.
Chesterfield – Set pieces 3 goals conceded and win on pens against a team that lost to Basingstoke!
Wigan – 2 long balls and a set piece, 0 points.

We have enough height and ability at the back so what the fuk is going on!! It MUST be down to the coaching staff, which makes Brownie going to Wet Spam all the more annoying

I’m really starting to get concerned!!

PS The “who should we get in instead” argument is not a valid one. Just because there doesnt "appear" to be anyone available to a club doesnt mean there isnt someone who would improve things.

    Its true.......

Who is responsible for our defensive coaching???
  • Options
Perhaps the honour last week was given to Steve Brown as a parting gesture - after all Diwarra in particular defended like an under 9! In fact all five goals came about because of rubbish defending. Do you really imagine Steve Brown is a better coach the Les Reed?

Now Im not trying to make excuses because there arent any......

However I read that the wind was on the top end of ridiculous out there..... ' Jewell said you needed to be by the pitch to be able to appreciate it'

Thing is that cuts both ways.......

I agree with you Mr Salad,

Steve Brown was a great defender, a legend. But doesn't make him a better coach than Les Reed. Les is an experienced coach who is highly regarded. I admit our defending has been alwful, but there was times under Day and Peacock when defending was also very sloppy.
Dowie spent alot of time last week working on tight marking at set pieces and zonal marking.. yet when it comes to Saturday split second of going asleep lets us down. This is why Dowie was "very dissapointed" with the goals we conceeded. Theres only so much a man can do, yet ultimately it comes down to the players to replica what they've done in training and if they don't then how is that Dowie's fault? Dowie can't teach Diawara to jump higher, or El Karkouri to actually mark hes player, its down to them.

The final comment is this, Charlton have been playing bad football for over a year now. We have'nt won back to back games in 44 outings. If it wasnt for the good start we got last season then we would have been in the same position we are now.

The players need to start giving more. I think Dowie deserves it.

Didn't we have two similar chances caused by long punts?
  • Options
Tom, agree with everything you say.

People seem to forget that we conceded 4 goals on a regular basis at the beginning of last season.

Was the defending better or worse?

it was, the car was getting pulled sideways up the m6. couldnt open the car door in the car park and kids were struggling to stay on their feet when we were leaving the ground, being held onto by parents and that coupled with the lashing rain made it tricky playing conditions

so it did work both ways mascot, and to prove that we scored fairly early on in the second half but then we er let that 3rd in.

Yep, the first goal came from DeZuee missing his headed, and the second from Webster cocking up.

Must admit for the first time this season my positive attitude is starting to Flag. Each game we play gets bigger & bigger. I really thought we were in no danger this season, it's just a matter of time, we have enough quality in squad, manager needs time, players need to gel. Basically we need a couple of Big results & quickly. I'll be there at Reading to back the team & I'll be positive again no doubt before kick off. As each game goes by though it is not looking good.

I keep remaining positive, because if you become negative theres no point in supporting the club.

We all know things are bad but I do feel as though there are worse teams than us in the premiership this season.

My positivity might have been to high for saturday.. went into bookies and put £3 on Reid to score Charlton to win 1-0

    110/1!

Thanks AFKA. Glad to see someone has same view.

I agree with the what more can Dowie do........

He must be on a knifeedge in the dressing room.... to much shouting and hell lose the team, go too soft and we keep turning out performances that result in zero points......

One other thing that really annoyed me yesterday was that match of the day put us down as having 65% possession and Wigan as 35%, yet NOTW they had Wigan as 57% and us as 43%.......

Also they got our figures wrong for our last 6 games saying we had drawn two and lost the rest!!!

Agree with you Ketman. I was looking at the team that played on Saturday and they are virtually all internationals at one level or another. I have so far been of the view that we would get out of it - but performances like Saturday's have made me think twice. If I'm honest I can't see us getting anything at Reading and then we are deep in the doo doo.

I dont think the coaching staff are 100% to blame and yes Brownie wouldnt be the answer (was more a statement of frustration if Im honest) but when we conceed goals of this ilk over and over and over then do questions not need to be asked?
  • Options
Watford and Sheffield United know they are in for a scrap and are fighting for their lives. We, on the other hand, seem to specialise in giving away soft goals.
  • Options
Exactly! If we were playing badly and were down there it would be easier to accept, but when were playing well and losing cos of avoidable goals it so fuking frustrating and concerns me that we could be one of those teams like Forest, Ipswich, West Ham et al that are "too good to go down" but end up getting relegated because of a massive loss of confidence and inability to do the basics correctly.....

Tom - keep doing the bet until it pays off - it will!! And I make you right about the players, from what little I know I am confident that Dowie/Reed are actually doing a good job (sounds strange I know!) and that it is important that the players respond and that the fans stay on board.

Dan - let's just stay positive, some bad defending in extreme conditions, by hook or by crook we have been keeping clean sheets in the league for a while, let's hope we get back to that on Saturday.

You could look at Saturday as our first defeat in 5, or you could be looking for the rusty razors

Sorry chaps, but Diawarra is NOT the new Rufus after all.

Impossible to tell. Still adapting and i don't think he got to grips with the conditions on Sat. Has been excellent up to Saturday though.

The one thing comparing with players in the past is you generally only remember the good points. Rufus was class, no doubt about it, but though he should of been given a chance, he was not international quality, and his distribution for the bulk of his career was poor.

I can't see how you can blame coaching for schoolboy errors SORRY I just can't see it.

One bad game in atrocious conditions does not turn him into a bad player. To date he's played consistently well, and been our best defender and other than Darren Bent our best outfield player. I'd sooner judge what I've seen to date and if I was Reed/Dowie I'd be looking to tighten things up at set pieces where most of the goals have been coming from. Looked at positively we aren't letting in too many from open play.

If it were a one off Arf I'd agree, but as it seems to be a reoccurring theme I'm wondering if there's an issue....

Apart from two on Saturday - and given we've conceded 4 from set pieces in two games it's an effing good job!

    Well said BFR.

Add the defending at Chelsea away when they scored from the corner.

We need to get a grip of the box. At the moment everyone is charging around without a clue. We need to bring another CB in January and thats a fact.

How about Hreidarsson, Sorondo and Gibbs? That's three centre-halves hopefully available before January!

Hreidarsson is a shocking centre back tho - his positioning is terrible

I think we might be screwed...... we need two or even three lucky wins and a tornado to blow three teams stadiums away and then we might be alright.... as for Herman hes rubbish, yet Diawara was pony yesterday as well.... lets pray that Troare comes in and sorts them all out.... Im up for Dowie knocking one of the youth team out or even a senior player to show hes serious, turning really nasty.... Oh i dont know, just an idea..
