Ten things you never knew about Blackpool........

1. A large area near the current North Pier was where a large number of bodies from the Great Plague of 1665 were taken to burial. It become known as 'The Black Pool'.

2. Blackpool has the largest percentage of left-handers in the country. 68% of its 142,900 inhabitants are left-handed, compared to the national average of 29%.

3. Blackpool is linked with electricity. Not only is it famed for its illuminations and for being the first area in the world to have street lighting, but in 1882, Joseph P. Milton was the first person to die from electric-assisted horseplay after his wife Grace tried to attach electrodes to his testicals whilst in the bath.

    You had me going there AFKA - your first fact seemed perfectly plausible which left me thinking 'surely not?' to number 2. So I googled 'Blackpool left handed'..................................and got directions to the Honeycombe Gay Sauna!

    8. Blackpool is home to the largest hole in the ground ever to be filled with waste chip fat. The former quarry is less than 2 miles inland from the main town. The filling began in 1953 and the quarry is estimated to be completely full some time in 2048. during cold winters the fat solidifies so much that the fat as been used as a form of ice rink, albeit one containung several billion small flecks of batter.

Instead of using thousands on environmentally unfriendly electric light bulbs the local council are going to collect rocks and shells from the seafront close to the nearby Sellafield reprocessing plant. The rocks and shell on those beaches glow in the dark.

    I saw them a few times 87-90ish but couldn't get tickets for this gig due to the ineptitude of a mate - one of the most miserable nights of my life missing out on this.

    15. After the Loos Battle (Sept 1915) the 'Divisional Military Authorities' in Blackpool built a replica of the trenches at Loos at Squires Gate, presumably for training purposes. It was then decided to make the system open to the general public as an educational and tourist attraction.

    23. They were formed in 1877 and were originally know as "the seasiders" and wore a completely black kit for home matches until they moved into their current ground at Bloomfield Road in 1899. Matches at the new ground were often played in foggy conditions due to the legendary Morecambe Mist that travelled south down the north west coastline. Their then manager, Arkwright Saddlebottom then changed the club colours to the famous luminous "tangerine" to gain advantage and they have remained unbeaten in the 117 League & Cup matches that have taken place in misty or foggy conditions at Bloomfield Road since the change.
