4-5-1

edited November 2007 in General Charlton
Anyone know why we played 4-5-1 when we are supposed to be a top side and playing at home

Comments

  • we played the same against Cardiff and won 3-0
  • Maybe because we had won 4 on the spin while playing that system and not conceded a goal? Just a hunch, like
  • you could tell we werent gonna score reid has burnt out already and when iwelumo is shit he is really shit, jus looked so negative on the break yesterday

4-5-1 at home is OK if you can change to 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 easily. Surprised we didn't do the latter after our initial 20 minutes of control with just Beattie up and no pace - they matched us up and we were going nowhere. ZZ does well but is not a forward, Varney playing wide would have been more flexible. When we went 4-4-2 in the second half, that was all our forwards used up and nobody to come on and add impetus. Only 2 forwards in a squad of 16, at home, seems inexcusable.

The problem we face is that big Chris will punish sides that make mistakes, but to score regularly we need quality upfront, somebody who can create his own chances. Apart from the run accross the box against Wednesday nearly all Chris's goals have been from a single touch.
  • I cannot stand watching us play 4-5-1 at home with just Iwelumo on his own, he doesn't win enough in the air for his size and we don't support him quick enough when he does. The onus is on us to attack at home....

That system works away from home.
  • According to yesterday's OS the idea is that 4-5-1 becomes 4-3-3 in attack and gives Iwelumo extra options than just one extra striker.

The danger of playing a formation like 4-5-1 and doing it regularly is that it does become predictable. Maybe time to vary it.
