Thinking about yesterdays terrible events it seems that the British justice system is poorly set up to deal with defendants that are clearly guilty yet can still elect for a full trial at great expense to the taxpayer and great emotional cost to the families of the victims and the witnesses. Is this right?

I know we have a principle of innocent until proven guilty and tbh it goes against the grain to think this way but it seems to me that we have reached a stage now, (with forensics, surveillance techniques, cameras on every street, etc) leading to cases coming up every so often where the weight of evidence is just so overwhelming that we need a fast track process to determine whether a full jury trial on a not guilty plea is remotely justifiable and if not a scaled down process to consider any mitigating circumstances should be triggered.

Dangerous ground perhaps but we know that the two people involved yesterday did what they did so why should we now put the family of the deceased through the potential trauma of a full trial at which they are likely to make further political capital in an attempt to justify their actions.

Really fascinating. To make his mark, his manager said he needed to have a hit record. With that he covered Hey Joe, so that charted and that was job done.
When engineers were putting together backing tracks, he had this uncanny knack of knowing which ones would work backwards as well. Apparently that was nigh on impossible to know that. He then got his first gig supporting The Walker Brothers, Cat Stephens, and Humperdinck (what !). He was told he had to make his mark. With that he set fire to his guitar with the aid of lighter fuel and just whirled it above his head like an axe. The Stage Manager was less than impressed and rushed on with an extinguisher with flames feet away from the curtains.
Next stop USA and he was teamed up with the Monkees. Biggest mismatch ever as the average age of a Monkees audience was ten and most of them ended up in tears. A complete mentalist, I just wish I had taken the chance to see him live.

Dear Fellow Lifers,

I am being made redundant on Friday, however I will be on 3 months gardening leave (full pay) then I get my dough.
But I am owed a bonus, this goes back to feb/march. It was with held, against my contract conditions, I had advice then to possibly proceed with legal action, but I did not want to compromise my position??, but obviously things change. And the person I took advice from has moved on.
Regarding this money, I have paper work (my contract) and no where does it say it cannot be withheld, the bonus is paid on completion of each project.
So my questions are, if I take action against my company while I'm on gardening leave, can they withhold any monies while waiting the outcome. Or do I have to suffer the lose and move on?

I have looked online but I think I need to talk to someone face to face, so any contacts or advice will be most welcome.

Thanks for reading.

J

I understand from reports that the Metropolitan Police Armed Response Unit took twenty minutes to arrive at the horrific scene at Woolwich today after the first 999 calls were made. Now I have no idea whether this twenty minutes is good or bad in response time but my gut instinct is that its far too long. It would seem from what I have heard so far is that after the dreadful killing that these terrorists engaged with onlookers and had no intention to continue the attacks on anyone else other than the unfortunate victim but just suppose they did. There were apparently Police officers on the scene but these were unarmed and unable or unwilling to confront the perpetrators. I don't condemn them for that. Isn't it about time that our police service was routinely armed ? I realise that is a huge leap but it is increasingly obvious that our streets are perilous places and ordinary law abiding citizens cannot be kept adequately safe. Is it too much to offer our serving police officers the protection they need for themselves in order to carry out their jobs and to enable them to offer protection to you, I. And our families.

Our 7 year old female Jack Russell, Ruby has a lump on her stomach (golf ball size). Have taken to a vet and although they say it could be anything they are leaning towards breast cancer because of the location of the lump. The lump is soft like a blister but has a hard object inside. The vet has recommended removing the lump and sending off for lab tests to determine if it is cancerous. The cost would be £450.

Has anyone been through a similar experience and is £450 a reasonable price? I'll admit that the cost is probably beyond our finances and I'll be talking to my wife tonight about the way forward.

Those of you who follow the news will know what I am on about.

I keep hearing, often from people from tax advisory, that it is all the fault of our law, which needs to brought up to date.

I beg to differ. It is the fault of HMRC and politicians who fail to understand how these businesses actually work. They keep saying it is so complicated. Oh yes? Well let me offer you a little analogy.

Suppose you build up a successful little business in, say, plumbing. Your sister lives in Dublin, and is an Internet wizard. You open up your company in Dublin, and "route the sales" as Amazon calls it, through the invoicing service your sister provides. For good measure she designs you a nice little website which is housed on an Irish server. Nevertheless your customers, and the central heating, taps and washing machines you fix, are all based in SE London

Try telling HMRC that you are eligible for Irish and not British corporation tax, because you have "routed the sales" through Dublin, and see where that gets you.

I don't see any substantive difference with what Amazon and Google are doing.

It is very difficult to "boycott" Google, but I have managed to almost 100% boycott Amazon since before Christmas. One thing in particular is, if it is a Marketplace deal, to see whether the vendor is online, and then buy directly from them. I wrote to Amazon telling them what I am doing, and will do so again after today's reports.

By the time I'd paid postage and commission and PayPal, and re-listed stuff that didn't sell I decided it wasn't worth the effort. I listed the last item (a very old unbranded amplifier) on Saturday expecting it not to sell. As of this morning I have 9 bidders and 35 watchers with 5 days still to run. I've come to the conclusion that the more shit something is the better chance of it selling. I am now wondering what the record is for watchers and bidders as in the past the maximum I've had is 5 watchers and 5 bidders. Ebay is nuts...FACT!

Anybody had any dealings of these? Got plans in for a single storey extension. Letter drops through the door yesterday from a surveyor apparently appointed by my neighbour, who I should add is on the non attached side of my semi detached house, stating that I need to get one of these surveys done before work can start,as the building work falls within 3 metres of her house. I'm guessing that this surveyor approached my neighbour once they saw I had plans in. It stinks as a con to me as they've kindly told me to keep aside £2500- £3500 if I don't decide to use them as they'll do it for a generous £1400! Now I've no idea if I need to get one of these done or not as I need to speak to my builder and architect. Just wondered if any of you well travelled lot had any experiences in the matter and how much it bloody cost!!

"Do an extension" they said."its cheaper than moving" they said.
I'm starting to beg to differ!

T.I.A
